1957 Cadet Sweets Footballers #9 Johnny Haynes MGC 6
This Johnny Haynes card is number 9 from the 1957 Cadet Sweets Footballers collection. The card has been graded MGC 6 by Majesty Grading Company.
At the time of issue, Haynes was already an established England international, having won his first cap in 1954. He was playing for Fulham in the Second Division, where his loyalty to the club despite interest from bigger sides became a defining feature of his career.
Born in Edmonton, London on 17 October 1934, Haynes joined Fulham as an amateur in 1950 and turned professional the following year. He made 657 appearances and scored 157 goals, a club record, and never played for another English league club. He captained England 22 times and won 56 caps, scoring 18 goals.
Following the abolition of the maximum wage in 1961, Haynes became the first British footballer to earn £100 per week. A serious car accident in 1962 ended his England career at the age of 29, though he continued to play for Fulham until 1970. Haynes passed away on 18 October 2005 at the age of 71.
