1954 Barratt Famous Footballers A.2 #36 Billy Wright
This Billy Wright card is number 36 from the 1954 Barratt Famous Footballers set (series A.2), identifying him as a Wolverhampton Wanderers player.
Barratt Famous Footballers was a series of confectionery trade cards produced by Barratt & Co of Wood Green, London, distributed with Barratt’s sweets. The A.2 series is the second in the Famous Footballers run, consisting of 50 cards featuring the leading players of the early 1950s.
Wright was 30 years old and at the peak of his career when this card was issued. He had recently captained Wolverhampton Wanderers to their first ever First Division title in 1953-54 and led England at the 1954 World Cup in Switzerland. He was already the most capped England player of all time and would go on to become the first footballer in the world to reach 100 international appearances, a landmark achieved in April 1959 against Scotland.
