1954 Barratt Famous Footballers A.2 #28 Tom Finney
This Tom Finney card is number 28 from the 1954 Barratt Famous Footballers set (series A.2), identifying him as a Preston North End player.
Barratt Famous Footballers was a series of confectionery trade cards produced by Barratt & Co of Wood Green, London, distributed with Barratt’s sweets. The A.2 series consists of 50 cards featuring the leading players of the early 1950s.
Finney was 32 years old and at the peak of his powers when this card was issued. He had just been named FWA Footballer of the Year for the first time in 1954, becoming the most decorated player in the country. Despite offers from abroad, including a lucrative approach from Palermo in 1952, Finney remained loyal to Preston throughout his career, turning down the opportunity to play in Serie A out of devotion to his hometown club.
He went on to win the award again in 1957, becoming the first player to receive it twice, and represented England at three World Cups. Bill Shankly described him as “the greatest player I ever saw, bar none.”
