1958 Cadet Sweets Footballers #41 Mel Charles
This Mel Charles card is number 41 from the 1958 Cadet Sweets Footballers set, identifying him as a Swansea player. The set consists of 50 cards distributed with Cadet brand sweets.
Cadet Sweets issued three editions of this Footballers set between 1958 and 1960, sharing the same card fronts but with different reverse designs. The 1958 edition is the first of the three issues.
This card was issued during the most significant year of Charles’ career. In the summer of 1958, he represented Wales at the World Cup in Sweden, playing in all five matches alongside his older brother John. He was on the pitch for the quarter final against Brazil, where the 17 year old Pelé scored the only goal to eliminate Wales from the competition. It remains one of the proudest chapters in Welsh football history.
Charles was in his seventh season at Swansea Town when this card was issued, already established as one of the finest players in Welsh football. Like his brother, he possessed remarkable versatility, operating with equal effectiveness in defence and attack. He departed Swansea in March 1959, ending a spell that saw him score 69 goals in 233 appearances for his hometown club.
