1972 A&BC Footballers Orange Red Back #105 Johnny Giles
This Johnny Giles card is number 105 from the 1972 A&BC Footballers set, the orange red back variation. The card identifies Giles as a Leeds United player.
A&BC (Anglo American Bubblegum Company) Footballers was one of the most popular bubblegum card series produced in Britain during the 1960s and 1970s.
Giles was at the peak of his powers when this card was issued. The 1971-72 season saw Leeds win the FA Cup, beating Arsenal 1-0 at Wembley, while also pushing the same opponents all the way in the league, finishing just a single point behind. Giles was the orchestrator of everything good about that Leeds side, dictating the tempo from central midfield with his vision, passing range and tactical intelligence.
He had arrived at Leeds from Manchester United in 1963 and transformed himself from a winger into one of the most complete midfielders in European football. His partnership with Billy Bremner remains one of the most celebrated in the history of the English game, combining creativity and control with an uncompromising competitive edge.
