The card was issued during a landmark year in Robson’s playing career. He had made his England debut in November 1957 against France, scoring twice in a 4-0 victory, and was selected for the 1958 World Cup squad in Sweden. At the time of issue, Robson was playing for West Bromwich Albion, having joined from Fulham in March 1956 for a club record fee of £25,000.
Born in Sacriston, County Durham on 18 February 1933, Robson won 20 England caps as a player before going on to become one of the most successful English managers in history. He won the FA Cup and UEFA Cup with Ipswich Town, managed England to the 1990 World Cup semi-finals, and won league titles in the Netherlands and Portugal.
He was knighted in 2002 and established the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation for cancer research in 2008. Robson passed away on 31 July 2009 at the age of 76.
