He had spent four seasons at Blackburn Rovers, where he won the Premier League title in 1994–95 and became the first player in 60 years to score over 30 league goals in three consecutive seasons.
Born in Gosforth, Newcastle on 13 August 1970, Shearer went on to become Newcastle’s all time leading scorer with 206 goals and remains the most prolific goalscorer in Premier League history.
