The 2022–23 season was Saliba’s first in an Arsenal shirt after three years on loan in France. He had been signed from Saint-Étienne in the summer of 2019 for £27 million but did not make a competitive appearance for the club until August 2022, having spent time on loan at Saint-Étienne, Nice, and Marseille. At Marseille in 2021–22, he was named Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year and earned a place in the Team of the Year, making it clear he was ready for the Premier League.
He made an immediate impact at Arsenal, becoming a cornerstone of the side that led the league for much of the season before being overtaken by Manchester City. A back injury ended his campaign in March 2023, but his performances were enough to earn him a place in the PFA Team of the Year.
Born in Bondy, Paris on 24 March 2001, Saliba grew up playing for AS Bondy, the same club where Kylian Mbappé learned the game. He made his senior debut for France in March 2022 and was part of the squad that reached the 2022 World Cup final.
