Pat Jennings (1963–1986, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Northern Ireland)
Pat Jennings was a goalkeeper widely regarded as one of the finest of his generation, born in Newry, County Down, in 1945. He began with his hometown club Newry Town before moving to England with Watford in 1963, and a season later joined Tottenham Hotspur, where he spent thirteen years and made well over 500 appearances.
With Tottenham Hotspur he won the FA Cup in 1967, the League Cup in 1971 and 1973 and the UEFA Cup in 1972, and he was named FWA Footballer of the Year in 1973. In 1977 he crossed North London to join Arsenal, where he added a second FA Cup in 1979 and, in 1983, became the first player in English football to reach 1,000 senior appearances. He remains one of very few players held in affection by supporters of both clubs.
For Northern Ireland he won 119 caps, a world record at the time and a national record that stood for more than thirty years, and he played at the 1982 and 1986 World Cups, making his final appearance on his 41st birthday. He was appointed MBE, later OBE, and then CBE for services to football and charity. He was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2003.
