Tony Adams (1983–2002, Arsenal and England)
Born in Romford in 1966, Tony Adams spent his entire playing career at Arsenal, making his first-team debut in 1983 at the age of 17. A commanding centre-back and natural organiser, he became a first-team regular within three seasons and went on to make 669 appearances across nineteen years, establishing himself as one of the club’s greatest players and a defender known throughout the game for his leadership.
He was made club captain at the age of 21 and held the role for the rest of his career. From the back he marshalled a defence that formed the foundation of repeated title-winning sides, and he remains the only player to captain a league championship team in three different decades, lifting the First Division trophy in 1989 and 1991 and the Premier League title in 1998 and 2002.
In 1996 Adams spoke publicly about his struggle with alcoholism, a turning point that he came through to extend his career into a second successful era. Under a new management approach his game broadened, and he remained club captain as Arsenal completed another league and FA Cup Double in 2001–02, before retiring as a champion. He later founded the Sporting Chance clinic to help other sportspeople facing addiction.
For England, Adams won 66 caps and scored 5 goals between 1987 and 2000, captaining his country on fifteen occasions, including at the 1996 European Championship. He moved into management after retiring, taking charge of several clubs, was appointed MBE in 1999, and is honoured with a statue outside Arsenal’s stadium.
