This is Matthews’ recognised rookie card, issued in the same year he made his England debut. Matthews won his first cap on 29 September 1934 against Wales at Ninian Park, scoring in a 4-0 victory. He was 19 years old and playing for Stoke City at the time of issue.
Matthews went on to become one of the greatest players English football has ever produced. Known as the Wizard of the Dribble, he won 54 caps for England between 1934 and 1957, won the inaugural Ballon d’Or in 1956, and was knighted in 1965 whilst still playing, becoming the first footballer to receive the honour. He finally retired at the age of 50 in 1965.
Matthews was an inaugural inductee of the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002.
