This Jimmy McIlroy card is number 49 from the 1956 Barratt Famous Footballers series. The card has been graded MGC 4 by Majesty Grading Company.
At the time of issue, McIlroy was establishing himself as one of the finest inside forwards in English football. He had joined Burnley from Glentoran in March 1950 for £7,000 and was building the reputation that would see him dubbed “the Brain” of Burnley. The club did not finish outside the top seven in the First Division between 1956 and 1963.
Born in Lambeg, County Antrim on 25 October 1931, McIlroy made 497 appearances for Burnley, scoring 131 goals. He was central to the club’s 1959-60 First Division title win and reached the FA Cup final in 1962. He won 55 caps for Northern Ireland and was part of the squad that reached the quarter-finals of the 1958 World Cup.
Burnley called him “our greatest ever player” upon his death on 20 August 2018 at the age of 86.
