1996 Merlin Premier Gold #103 David Ginola MGC 8
This David Ginola card is number 103 from the 1996 Merlin Premier Gold collection, covering the 1996-97 Premier League season.
Merlin Premier Gold was a premium trading card set produced annually during the late 1990s, featuring foil card designs across the Premier League.
Ginola was in his second season at Newcastle when this card was issued. The 1996-97 campaign began with the arrival of Alan Shearer for a world record fee, and hopes were high that Newcastle could go one better than their agonising second place finish the previous year.
The highlight of the season came on 20 October 1996 when Newcastle beat Manchester United 5-0 at St James’ Park. Ginola scored a stunning goal, receiving the ball with his back to goal, turning inside past Gary Neville and driving a right footed shot into the top corner. He also scored a spectacular volley against Ferencváros in the UEFA Cup. The season was disrupted by Kevin Keegan’s resignation in January 1997, with Kenny Dalglish appointed as his successor. Newcastle finished second in the league for the second consecutive year.
