The Turf Cigarettes Footballers set was issued by Carreras Ltd as slide cards inserted into packets of Turf brand cigarettes. The set consists of 50 cards featuring leading footballers of the late 1940s. As slide cards, they were designed to be separated from the surrounding packaging, meaning surviving examples in good condition are scarce.
This card was issued during the early years of Finney’s career. His league debut had been delayed until August 1946 by the Second World War, but he made an immediate impact, scoring on his England debut just 28 days later. By 1948, he was already established as one of the finest players in the country.
Finney would go on to become one of the greatest players in the history of English football. Bill Shankly described him as “the greatest player I ever saw, bar none” and Stanley Matthews compared him to Pelé, Maradona and George Best. He remained loyal to Preston for his entire career, rejecting the opportunity to move abroad.
Only four examples of this card have been graded higher by SGC, making this a scarce high grade example of a card that is nearly 80 years old.
