1935 Sporting Events and Stars #81 Peter Doherty
This Peter Doherty card is number 81 from the 1935 Sporting Events and Stars set, featuring the Northern Irish inside forward during his time at Blackpool.
Sporting Events and Stars is a multi sport trade card set issued in 1935, covering a range of sporting disciplines including football, cricket, boxing and athletics. The set captures many of the leading sportsmen of the mid 1930s.
Doherty was 21 years old and in his second season at Blackpool when this card was issued. He had arrived from Glentoran in November 1933 and was already attracting attention as one of the most gifted inside forwards in the Football League. He won the first of his 16 Northern Ireland caps in February 1935, beginning an international career that would span 15 years.
Within a year of this card’s issue, Doherty was sold to Manchester City for a club record £10,000 and went on to fire them to the First Division title. Joe Mercer later said of him: “Of all the opponents I faced, I particularly remember Doherty, who was unplayable on his day.” This card captures Doherty at the very beginning of a career that would see him recognised as one of the finest players of his generation and one of the first inductees into the English Football Hall of Fame.
