1958 Cadet Sweets Footballers #29 Danny Blanchflower
This Danny Blanchflower card is number 29 from the 1958 Cadet Sweets Footballers set, identifying him as a Tottenham Hotspur player. The set consists of 50 cards distributed with Cadet brand sweets.
Cadet Sweets issued three editions of this Footballers set between 1958 and 1960, sharing the same card fronts but with different reverse designs. The 1958 edition is the first of the three issues.
This card was issued during one of the defining years of Blanchflower’s career. He was named FWA Footballer of the Year in 1958 and captained Northern Ireland at the World Cup in Sweden that summer, leading an unfancied side to the quarter finals in what remains the nation’s finest tournament performance. He was named in the official World Cup All Star Team for his performances, cementing his reputation as one of the finest midfielders in the world.
The 1958 World Cup carried personal tragedy alongside triumph. His younger brother Jackie had been part of the Manchester United squad devastated by the Munich Air Disaster in February of that year, suffering injuries that ended his playing career. Danny’s performances that summer, in the shadow of his brother’s misfortune, remain among the most admired in the history of British football.
