1959 Cadet Sweets Footballers #33 Nat Lofthouse
This Nat Lofthouse card is number 33 from the 1959 Cadet Sweets Footballers set, identifying him as a Bolton Wanderers player. The set consists of 50 cards distributed with Cadet brand sweets.
Cadet Sweets issued three editions of this Footballers set between 1958 and 1960, sharing the same card fronts but with different reverse designs. The 1959 edition is the second of the three issues.
Lofthouse was 33 years old and approaching the end of his career when this card was issued. The previous season he had captained Bolton to FA Cup glory, scoring both goals in a 2-0 victory at Wembley. He retired from playing in January 1960 due to an ankle injury, ending a career spent entirely with his hometown club.
The “Lion of Vienna” was the quintessential English centre forward of the post war era. Brave, powerful, dominant in the air and relentless in front of goal, he scored 285 goals for Bolton and 30 for England across a career that began as a 15 year old during the Second World War, when he combined football with shifts in the Lancashire coal mines as a Bevin Boy.
