Bobby Moore (1958–1977, West Ham United, England and Fulham)

Bobby Moore was a composed and commanding defender, widely regarded as one of the finest in the history of the game, born in Barking, Essex, in 1941. He spent the heart of his career with West Ham United, captaining the club for more than ten years and making over 600 appearances.

He led the side to the FA Cup in 1964 and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1965, and was voted Footballer of the Year in 1964.

Moore made his England debut in 1962 and played at that summer’s World Cup, then became captain in 1963 at the age of 22, the youngest player to lead the side. He went on to lift the World Cup as captain in 1966 and led England again at the 1970 World Cup, winning 108 caps in all, a national record at the time of his retirement in 1973. He was named BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1966 and appointed OBE in 1967.

He left West Ham United for Fulham in 1974, reaching the FA Cup final in 1975, and later played in North America before retiring in 1977. He died in 1993 at the age of 51. West Ham United retired his number 6 shirt in his honour, and he was an inaugural inductee into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002.
