Gordon Banks (1963-1972, Leicester City, Stoke City)

Gordon Banks was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2002, he is a founding inductee.

Gordon Banks was England’s goalkeeper during the 1966 World Cup victory and is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history.

His most famous moment came in the 1970 World Cup when he made an extraordinary save from a Pelé header, a moment forever known as the “save of the century”.

Banks won the League Cup with Leicester City in 1964 and again with Stoke City in 1972, earning 73 caps for England before a car accident in 1972 cost him the sight in one eye and ended his top-flight career.

Gordon Banks – Rookie Cards and Significant Others

Gordon Banks’ rookie card is the 1962-63 Barratt A10 Footballers issue, produced during his time at Leicester City. This card represents Banks early in his career, before his England debut and subsequent rise to become the world’s greatest goalkeeper. The Barratt A10 set is highly collectible and Banks’ rookie card is one of the key cards from the series.

Banks’ most significant cards come from the 1966 World Cup period and immediately after England’s victory. The 1966 A&BC World Cup Stars set features Banks in his England kit and remains one of the most collectible cards from England’s greatest footballing achievement. Cards from the 1966-67 and 1967-68 seasons, issued whilst Banks was at the peak of his powers, are particularly desirable.

After his transfer to Stoke City in 1967, cards featuring Banks in Stoke colours became available through the standard A&BC and later Topps sets. His 1970 cards are especially notable, issued in the aftermath of his legendary save from Pelé at the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, which cemented his status as the world’s greatest goalkeeper.

Banks’ career-ending car accident in 1972 means his playing career cards span a relatively compact period of roughly a decade, making complete runs of his cards an achievable but rewarding collecting goal.
