Peter Shilton (1966–1997, Nottingham Forest, England and Leicester City)
Peter Shilton was one of the finest goalkeepers in the history of the English game, born in Leicester in 1949. He began his career with his home city club, Leicester City, making his debut at sixteen and reaching the 1969 FA Cup final. After 286 league games for Leicester he moved to Stoke City in 1974 for a fee that was then a world record for a goalkeeper, reported at around £325,000 to £350,000.
In 1977 he joined Nottingham Forest, where he enjoyed the most successful period of his career, winning the First Division title in 1977-78 and back to back European Cups in 1979 and 1980, along with the European Super Cup and the League Cup in 1979.
Later spells followed with Southampton and Derby County, and across a career lasting more than thirty years he turned out for eleven clubs in total, including Plymouth Argyle, where he was also player-manager, and finally Leyton Orient. He became the first player to reach 1,000 Football League appearances, finishing with a total of 1,005.
For England he won a record 125 caps between 1970 and 1990, more than any other male player, and represented his country at three World Cups, in 1982, 1986 and 1990, as well as the 1980 and 1988 European Championships. He was appointed MBE in 1986, OBE in 1991 and CBE in 2024. He was an inaugural inductee into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002.
