This is the rookie card of Duncan Edwards, number 39 from the 1954 Barratt Famous Footballers set (series A.2), identifying him as a Manchester United player.

Barratt Famous Footballers was a series of confectionery trade cards produced by Barratt & Co of Wood Green, London, distributed with Barratt’s sweets. The A.2 series consists of 50 cards featuring the leading players of the early 1950s.

Edwards was just 17 years old when this card was issued, having made his first team debut in April 1953 aged 16 and turned professional on his 17th birthday in October 1953. He was already establishing himself in the Manchester United first team, taking over at left half from the veteran Henry Cockburn and beginning to attract attention as the most exciting young talent in English football.

Within four years of this card being produced, Edwards was dead, killed in the Munich Air Disaster at the age of 21. In the short career that followed this rookie card, he won two league titles, earned 18 England caps and was described by his contemporaries as the finest player they had ever seen. Bobby Charlton called him “the only player that made me feel inferior” and Terry Venables said that had he lived, it would have been Edwards, not Bobby Moore, who lifted the World Cup trophy in 1966.
