1954 Barratt Famous Footballers Roy Paul MGC 3
This Roy Paul card is from the 1954 Barratt Famous Footballers series. The card has been graded MGC 3 by Majesty Grading Company.
At the time of issue, Paul was captain of Manchester City in the First Division. The following year, he would lead City to two successive FA Cup finals, losing the first to Newcastle United in 1955 before captaining the side to a 3-1 victory over Birmingham City in the 1956 final, the match famously remembered for goalkeeper Bert Trautmann playing on with a broken neck.
Born in Ton Pentre in the Rhondda Valley on 18 April 1920, Paul left school at 15 to work as a miner before signing for Swansea Town in 1938. His career was disrupted by the Second World War, during which he served as a physical training instructor. He made 159 league appearances for Swansea and won the Third Division South title in 1948-49 before joining Manchester City in June 1950 for £19,500.
He won 33 caps for Wales and made 293 appearances for Manchester City. Paul passed away on 21 May 2002 at the age of 82.
