The card was issued during the 1955-56 season, in which Edwards played 33 times as Manchester United won the First Division title by 11 points. He was 19 years old at the time of the issue and already a regular in the England squad.
Edwards had made his First Division debut in April 1953 at 16 years and 183 days, becoming the youngest player to appear in England’s top flight.
Edwards went on to win a second consecutive league title in 1957 and reached the semi-finals of the European Cup. He was one of eight players to lose their lives following the Munich air disaster on 6 February 1958, dying in hospital on 21 February 1958 at the age of 21.
He was inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002.
