This Bobby Charlton card is number 25 from the 1958 Cadet Sweets Footballers set, issued during his rookie year. The set consists of 50 cards featuring leading footballers of the era.
Cadet Sweets Footballers cards were small format confectionery trade cards distributed with Cadet brand sweets. Three versions of the set were produced between 1958 and 1960, with the 1958 issue being the earliest and most desirable.
This card was issued in the same year as the Munich Air Disaster, one of the darkest moments in British sporting history. On 6 February 1958, the aircraft carrying the Manchester United squad crashed on take off at Munich-Riem airport, killing 23 people including eight players. The 20 year old Charlton survived the crash and returned to play for United just weeks later, going on to become one of the greatest footballers the world has ever seen.
Charlton helped rebuild the club from the devastation of Munich, winning three league titles and the 1968 European Cup, in which he scored twice in the final against Benfica. He won the World Cup with England in 1966, scoring three goals in the tournament, and was awarded the Ballon d’Or the same year. His 49 goals for England stood as a national record for 45 years.
