Barnes entered the tournament in outstanding form, having just finished as Liverpool’s top scorer with 22 league goals in the 1989-90 title winning season, earning him the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award for the second time.
Born in Kingston, Jamaica on 7 November 1963, Barnes moved to England at the age of 12. He began his career at Watford before signing for Liverpool in 1987 for £900,000. He made 403 appearances for Liverpool, scoring 106 goals and winning two league titles, two FA Cups and the League Cup.
He won 79 England caps and, at the time of his retirement, held the record as England’s most capped black player.
