The 1990-91 campaign was a remarkable season for Sheringham at Millwall. Playing in the Second Division following the club’s relegation the previous year, he scored 37 goals to finish as the top scorer across the entire Football League, including four hat tricks.
Millwall reached the Second Division play-off semi finals but were beaten by Brighton & Hove Albion. Sheringham’s goalscoring form made a departure inevitable, and he broke all of Millwall’s scoring records in what proved to be his final season at The Den before his £2 million move to Nottingham Forest in July 1991.
