Hughes was in his third season back at Manchester United after returning from Barcelona in 1988. The 1990-91 campaign saw United win the European Cup Winners’ Cup, with Hughes scoring both goals in the final against his former club Barcelona.
That same season, Hughes was named PFA Players’ Player of the Year for the second time, becoming the first player to win the award twice. He remained a key figure in Alex Ferguson’s side throughout the early 1990s as United emerged as the dominant force in English football.
