Liverpool finished fourth in the Premier League in 1996-97, level on 68 points with second placed Newcastle and third placed Arsenal but behind on goal difference. It was a frustrating campaign, having led the table for much of the first half of the season before a late collapse cost them a place in the top two and Champions League qualification.
