At the time of issue, Beckham was establishing himself as one of the most recognisable players in world football. He had scored his famous halfway line goal on the opening day of the 1996-97 season and won the PFA Young Player of the Year award that same campaign. The 1997-98 season saw Manchester United finish second in the league, before Beckham headed to the 1998 World Cup in France.
Born in Leytonstone, London on 2 May 1975, Beckham joined Manchester United’s youth system in 1991 as part of the celebrated Class of ’92. He went on to make 394 appearances for United, winning six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the Champions League as part of the historic 1998-99 treble.
He later won La Liga with Real Madrid, two MLS Cups with LA Galaxy and the Ligue 1 title with Paris Saint-Germain, becoming the first British player to win league titles in four countries.
