Zola’s first season at Chelsea was extraordinary. Having arrived from Parma in November 1996, he took just a handful of matches to establish himself as one of the most gifted players in the Premier League. He was named FWA Footballer of the Year at the end of the campaign, the first player to win the award in his debut season since Jurgen Klinsmann in 1995, and the first Chelsea player to receive the honour since Alan Hudson in 1975.
The diminutive Italian’s technical brilliance, vision and ability to produce moments of genius made him an instant favourite at Stamford Bridge. He went on to spend seven seasons at the club, winning four major trophies and being voted Chelsea’s greatest ever player in a supporters’ poll in 2003.
