Viv Anderson (1974–1995, Nottingham Forest, Arsenal, Manchester United, Sheffield Wednesday, Barnsley, Middlesbrough and England)

Born in Nottingham in 1956 to parents who had come to Britain from Jamaica, Viv Anderson made his debut for his hometown club Nottingham Forest in 1974 at the age of eighteen. An athletic, attack-minded right-back nicknamed “Spider” for his long legs and reach, he became a defensive cornerstone of one of the most successful sides in English football and a genuine pioneer of the game.

Under a transformative manager, Forest rose from the Second Division to win promotion in 1977 and the First Division title a year later. Anderson was central to the team that then conquered Europe, winning the European Cup in 1979 and retaining it in 1980, along with the European Super Cup and back-to-back League Cups. He was named in the PFA Team of the Year three times across his career.

In 1978 Anderson made history by becoming the first black footballer to win a full senior cap for England, a landmark moment in the English game. He did so at a time when black players were few in the top flight and routinely subjected to racial abuse from the terraces, and his success helped open the door for the generations that followed. He went on to win 30 caps and was involved in England squads at Euro 1980 and the 1982 and 1986 World Cups.

After ten years with Forest he joined Arsenal, where he won another League Cup in 1987, before spells with Manchester United and Sheffield Wednesday. He moved into player-management and coaching towards the end of his career, was appointed MBE in 2000, and remains one of the most significant figures in the history of the English game.

Viv Anderson – Rookie Cards and Significant Others

Anderson’s card record begins in the late 1970s sticker era, during his rise with Nottingham Forest, and runs through the years of his greatest success. The earliest widely catalogued issue I can verify is the 1977-78 FKS Soccer Stars #281, with the major sticker and card brands of the period all featuring him as he became an established First Division and international player.

The most collected examples come from his Forest peak, the European Cup and England-debut seasons, with FKS, Panini and Topps issues sitting at the heart of any collection. He continued to appear in sets through his Arsenal and Manchester United years.
