Stam was a dominant centre-back who formed part of Manchester United’s treble-winning defence in 1998-99. His £10.6 million transfer from PSV Eindhoven in 1998 was a British record for a defender at the time. During his three seasons at Old Trafford, he won three Premier League titles, one FA Cup, and the Champions League.
