1996 Merlin Premier Gold #5 Ian Wright MGC 7
This Ian Wright card is number 5 from the 1996 Merlin Premier Gold collection. The card has been graded MGC 7 Near Mint by Majesty Grading Company.
The card was issued for the 1996-97 season, Arsène Wenger’s first in charge at Arsenal. Wright was the Premier League’s second highest scorer that season with 23 goals, continuing his remarkable record as the club’s top scorer for a sixth successive campaign.
Born in Woolwich, London on 3 November 1963, Wright was a late starter in professional football, working as a plasterer before Crystal Palace signed him at the age of 21. He scored 117 goals for Palace before joining Arsenal in September 1991 for a club record £2.5 million. He went on to score 185 goals in 288 appearances, becoming the club’s all time leading scorer, a record since surpassed by Thierry Henry.
He broke Cliff Bastin’s long standing record with a hat trick against Bolton Wanderers in September 1997.
