This card is number 76 from the 1958 WS-Verlag Fussball-Weltmeisterschaft set, depicting a scene from the quarter final between Brazil and Wales at the 1958 FIFA World Cup. It is recognised as one of several Pelé rookie cards from this German produced set.

The WS-Verlag set was issued in Germany in 1958 directly after the World Cup in Sweden. It consists of 96 black and white cards that were designed to be glued into an accompanying album. The set features the German national squad alongside match scenes from across the tournament. Three cards in the set depict Pelé, making these among the earliest cardboard depictions of the Brazilian legend produced anywhere in the world.

Card #76 captures the Brazil v Wales quarter final, played on 19 June 1958 in Gothenburg. The 17 year old Pelé scored the only goal of the match in the 73rd minute to eliminate Wales from the competition. It was Wales’ finest World Cup campaign and their only appearance at the finals until 2022, when they qualified again after a 64 year absence. The Welsh side featured John Charles’ brother Mel, goalkeeper Jack Kelsey and Swansea Town’s Ivor Allchurch among others.

Pelé finished the 1958 tournament with six goals, including two in the final against Sweden, announcing himself as the most exciting young talent in world football. He went on to win three World Cups and is widely regarded as the greatest player in the history of the game.
