1954 Barratt Famous Footballers A.2 #9 Alf Ramsey
This Alf Ramsey card is number 9 from the 1954 Barratt Famous Footballers set (series A.2), identifying him as a Tottenham Hotspur player.
Barratt Famous Footballers was a series of confectionery trade cards produced by Barratt & Co of Wood Green, London, distributed with Barratt’s sweets. The A.2 series consists of 50 cards featuring the leading players of the early 1950s.
Ramsey was 34 years old and in the final years of his playing career when this card was issued. He had been instrumental in Tottenham’s First Division title win in 1950-51, using his precise passing and tactical awareness to drive Arthur Rowe’s innovative “push and run” system from right back. He earned 32 England caps and captained his country, with his final international appearance coming in the famous 6-3 defeat to Hungary at Wembley in November 1953.
After retiring as a player in 1955, Ramsey went into management and guided England to their only World Cup triumph in 1966, cementing his place as one of the most important figures in the history of English football.
