Williams captained Wales during the greatest period in the nation’s modern football history. At Euro 2016, he led the side to the semi finals, heading the crucial equaliser against Belgium in the quarter final in Lille. It was Wales’ first appearance at a major tournament since the 1958 World Cup and the furthest the nation had ever progressed in a European Championship.
Before his international heroics, Williams had spent eight years at Swansea City, rising from non league football to become one of the most respected defenders in the Premier League. He captained the club to the League Cup in 2013 and at one point played 169 consecutive league matches. Alan Curtis described him as “probably our greatest ever defender and one of our greatest ever players.”
