1954 Barratt Famous Footballers A.2 #45 Stanley Matthews
This Stanley Matthews card is number 45 from the 1954 Barratt Famous Footballers set (series A.2), identifying him as a Blackpool player.
Barratt Famous Footballers was a series of confectionery trade cards produced by Barratt & Co of Wood Green, London, distributed with Barratt’s sweets. The A.2 series consists of 50 cards featuring the leading players of the early 1950s.
Matthews was 39 years old when this card was issued, having won the FA Cup with Blackpool the previous year in the famous “Matthews Final.” Trailing 3-1 to Bolton Wanderers with 20 minutes remaining, Matthews produced one of the most extraordinary individual performances in the history of the game, creating three goals as Blackpool won 4-3. It remains one of the most celebrated matches in the history of English football.
Two years after this card was issued, Matthews won the inaugural Ballon d’Or at the age of 41, beating Alfredo Di Stéfano to the award. He continued to play at the highest level for another decade, eventually retiring in 1965 at the age of 50, the oldest player ever to appear in England’s top division.
