Schmeichel had signed for Manchester United from Brøndby in August 1991 for £505,000, making the 1991-92 campaign his debut season at the club. He quickly established himself as first choice goalkeeper under Alex Ferguson.

United finished second in the First Division behind Leeds United and won the League Cup, beating Nottingham Forest in the final. Schmeichel was named IFFHS World’s Best Goalkeeper at the end of the season, the first of two consecutive years he won the award.
