1996 Merlin Premier Gold #53 Gary Speed MGC 8
This Gary Speed card is number 53 from the 1996 Merlin Premier Gold collection, covering the 1996-97 Premier League season.
Merlin Premier Gold was a premium trading card set produced annually during the late 1990s, featuring foil card designs across the Premier League.
Speed had joined his boyhood club Everton from Leeds United in the summer of 1996 for £3.5 million, fulfilling a lifelong ambition. The 1996-97 season was an outstanding debut campaign. He scored on his first appearance against Newcastle United and went on to score 11 goals, including the only hat trick of his career in a 7-1 win over Southampton. He finished the season as joint top scorer alongside Duncan Ferguson and was voted Everton Player of the Year.
Speed had already established himself as one of the most consistent midfielders in English football during eight seasons at Leeds, where he was part of the midfield quartet that won the last ever First Division title in 1991-92. His 85 caps for Wales made him the most capped Welsh outfield player at the time of his international retirement in 2004.
