1997 Merlin Premier Gold #48 Gianfranco Zola MGC 10
This Gianfranco Zola card is number 48 from the 1997 Merlin Premier Gold collection, covering the 1997-98 Premier League season.
Merlin Premier Gold was a premium trading card set produced annually during the late 1990s, featuring foil card designs across the Premier League.
The 1997-98 campaign was Zola’s first full season at Chelsea, having arrived from Parma in November of the previous year. He played under the joint management of Ruud Gullit and later Gianluca Vialli, who took over in February 1998 after Gullit’s dismissal.
Chelsea enjoyed a trophy laden season, winning the League Cup and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup. Zola scored one of the most memorable goals of his career in the Cup Winners’ Cup final against VfB Stuttgart in Stockholm, coming on as a substitute and scoring the winner within seconds of his introduction, striking the ball into the roof of the net with only his second touch. Chelsea finished fourth in the Premier League to qualify for the Champions League.
