This John Barnes card is number 97 from the 1997 Merlin Premier Gold series. The card has been graded MGC 9.
The 1997 Merlin Premier Gold set covers the 1996–97 season, Barnes’s final campaign at Liverpool. By this stage of his career he had reinvented himself as a deep lying central midfielder, captaining the side after a decade of service at Anfield. It was a role that showcased his footballing intelligence and passing ability long after the pace that had made him one of the most exciting wingers in the world had faded.
Barnes joined Liverpool from Watford in the summer of 1987 for £900,000. Alongside Peter Beardsley and John Aldridge, he was part of a side that played some of the finest football English football has ever seen. He won two league titles in 1988 and 1990, two FA Cups, and a League Cup, making over 400 appearances for the club. He left for Newcastle United in the summer of 1997.
