Zola had signed for Chelsea from Parma in November 1996, a full three months into the 1996-97 Premier League campaign. Despite missing the first 12 matches, he made an immediate and transformative impact at Stamford Bridge, scoring eight league goals and providing the creative spark for Ruud Gullit’s side.

He scored four goals in Chelsea’s run to the FA Cup final, including a memorable curling effort against Liverpool in the fourth round and an individual strike of great skill against Wimbledon in the semi final. Chelsea beat Middlesbrough 2-0 at Wembley to lift the trophy, their first major honour in 26 years. Zola remains the only player in the history of the FWA award to have won it without playing a full season in the English league.
