This Billy Meredith card is number 62 from the Godfrey Phillips Pinnace Footballers series, featuring a photographic image of the Welsh legend in his Manchester United kit. The card has the “Pinnace” back variation.
The Pinnace Footballers series was produced by Godfrey Phillips Ltd between 1920 and 1923 and is one of the largest cigarette card sets ever issued, running to over 2,400 cards across all divisions. The cards feature small real photographs of players and were distributed in packets of Pinnace cigarettes.
Meredith was already in his late forties when this card was produced, in the final years of an astonishing career that spanned over three decades. He had first signed for Manchester City in 1894 while still working in the coal mines, and would not retire until 1924 at the age of 49. His career of over 1,500 matches and 470 goals places him among the most remarkable figures in football history.
Beyond his playing achievements, Meredith was a pioneer off the pitch. His experiences as a miner shaped his political views and he became a driving force behind the creation of the Players’ Union, fighting for better pay and conditions for professional footballers at a time when clubs held near total control over their players.
This is the highest graded example of this card by PSA, making it the finest known copy of a card that is over 100 years old.
