1967 A&BC Footballers Star Players #54 Gareth Sprake
This Gareth Sprake card is number 54 from the 1967 A&BC Footballers Star Players set, identifying him as a Leeds United player.
A&BC (Anglo American Bubblegum Company) Footballers was one of the most popular bubblegum card series produced in Britain during the 1960s and 1970s. The Star Players subset was issued in 1967.
Sprake was 21 years old and established as Leeds United’s first choice goalkeeper when this card was issued. He had already been part of the side that won promotion from the Second Division in 1964 and had narrowly missed out on the League and FA Cup Double in 1964-65. By the 1966-67 season, Leeds were one of the strongest teams in the country under Don Revie, and Sprake’s agility, shot stopping ability and command of his area were central to their defensive strength.
Born and raised in Swansea, Sprake had played rugby at school before switching to football and catching the eye of Leeds United scouts. He went on to become one of the most decorated Welsh goalkeepers of his era, earning 37 caps for his country.
