1939 Churchman’s Cigarettes #35 Stanley Matthews SGC 5.5
This Stanley Matthews card is number 35 from the 1939 Churchman’s Cigarettes Association Footballers collection.
The card has been graded SGC 5.5 Excellent+.
By 1939, Matthews was established as one of England’s most important players. Matthews had won 18 caps for England by the time this card was issued and was a key figure in Stoke City’s First Division side. The outbreak of the Second World War in September 1939 would go on to cost Matthews seven years of his career, during which no official Football League matches were played.
Matthews went on to become one of the greatest players English football has ever produced. Known as the Wizard of the Dribble, Matthews won 54 caps for England between 1934 and 1957, won the inaugural Ballon d’Or in 1956, and was knighted in 1965 whilst still playing, becoming the first footballer to receive the honour.
Matthews finally retired at the age of 50 in 1965 and was an inaugural inductee of the English Football Hall of Fame in 2002.
