1969-70 A&BC Footballers Green Back #104 Gordon Banks
This Gordon Banks card is number 104 from the 1969-70 A&BC Footballers set, the green back variation. The card identifies Banks as a Stoke City player.
A&BC (Anglo American Bubblegum Company) Footballers was one of the most popular bubblegum card series produced in Britain during the 1960s and 1970s. The 1969-70 set features green coloured reverse designs, distinguishing it from the orange and red back variations of other seasons.
Banks was England’s undisputed first choice goalkeeper when this card was issued, three years on from his role in the 1966 World Cup triumph. The 1969-70 season ended with the 1970 World Cup in Mexico, where Banks produced what is widely regarded as the greatest save in football history, diving full length to somehow claw away Pelé’s downward header against Brazil. Pelé himself later said: “I thought that was a goal. When I headed the ball, I was already shouting ‘goal.'”
England were eliminated in the quarter finals by West Germany after Banks was forced to miss the match through illness. Many believe his absence was the decisive factor in England’s 3-2 defeat, having been 2-0 ahead. He had kept 35 clean sheets in 73 appearances for his country, losing only nine of those matches.
