Fowler had established himself as one of the deadliest strikers in European football by the time this card was issued, having scored over 30 goals in three consecutive seasons between 1994-95 and 1996-97. The 1997-98 campaign was disrupted by a serious knee ligament injury sustained in a pre season friendly, which kept him out for the opening months and ultimately cost him a place in England’s 1998 World Cup squad.
During Fowler’s absence, the teenage Michael Owen emerged as a first team regular, beginning a period of competition for the striker’s position that would define the next few seasons at Anfield. Despite the setback, Fowler returned to score regularly in the second half of the campaign, demonstrating the natural finishing ability that earned him the nickname “God” on the Kop.
