Born in Montivilliers, France on 1 March 1992, Mendy rose through the lower tiers of French football and was unemployed and close to quitting the game in 2014. He rebuilt his career at Reims and Rennes before Chelsea signed him in September 2020 for £22 million. He made 105 appearances for Chelsea, keeping 49 clean sheets.
