Akanji joined Manchester City from Borussia Dortmund in September 2022 for a reported fee of £15 million and made an immediate impact, becoming a key part of the defence that won the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup treble in his first season. He played more minutes than any other City defender during that campaign.

Born in Wiesendangen, Switzerland on 19 July 1995 to a Swiss mother and Nigerian father, Akanji began his career at FC Winterthur before moving to FC Basel and then Borussia Dortmund. He has won 76 caps for Switzerland and represented his country at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups and Euro 2020 and Euro 2024, where he was named in the UEFA Team of the Tournament.
