The 1968 A&BC set covers the 1967–68 season, Hughes’s first full campaign at Liverpool after signing from Blackpool in February 1967 for £65,000. He was 20 years old. Bill Shankly reportedly told a policeman on the drive to complete the signing that he had the future captain of England in his car.
Born in Barrow in Furness on 28 August 1947, Hughes went on to become one of Liverpool’s greatest ever players, captaining the side through their most dominant era in European football. He died on 9 November 2004 at the age of 57.
